Swim Strong takes 2nd place at the 25th Annual New York Athletic Club Wally Leggat Invitational Swim Meet at Travers Island! Swim Strong was represented by: Novices: Nicky, Katie, Lauren, Zuzanna, Owen, Matt O, Matt S and Chris; Bantams: Julia, Shauna, Nicole, Laura, Jordan, Kendall, Emma, Conor, Winrich, Randy and Jake, Juniors: Gabby, Anjelica, Amanda, Vanessa, Dan, Minwoo, Ryan and Josh Seniors: Marisa, Abby, Jackie, Vilma, Natalia, Tara, Jenny, Kathy, Mike, Niko, Kelvin and Matt. April 19, 2009 Spring '09 Water Polo & Surfing Clinic
The pool was ROCKED at Swim Strong's first clinic of the year on April 19th! We had great athletes from the Women's New York Athletic Club Water Polo team as well as from the New York University Surf Club (via WAVES for Development Foundation) come and teach 40 lucky kids how to get in and mix it up and hang 10! This is a key part of Swim Strong's initiative of opening new doors and providing new experiences in multi water sports. After all, in some cases there are actually college scholarships available!

On Sunday June 8th the Swim Strong Foundation, in conjunction with the New York Athletic Club's men's and women's water polo teams, hosted a water polo clinic for children 12-16 years of age. Nearly 100 kids from the swim programs of St. Sebastian's, LIAM, and Boy's and Girl's Club participated. Members of both the men's and women's water polo teams participated in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic games. The women's team won bronze medals. The Water Polo Clinic provided young swimmers with the opportunity to challenge themselves by learning different water sports and working as a team. They learned the basics of the sport, including ball handling-skills, the fundamentals of offense and defense, as well as how to shoot and pass. The event was held at the St. Sebastian's Pool in Woodside Queens. A GREAT time was had by all!
Spring 2008Olympian Lenny Krayzelburg Endorses The Swim Strong
Foundation!
Olympic Gold medal winner Lenny Krayzelburg has endorsed The Swim Strong Foundation. When Krayzelburg first began swimming in Odessa, Russia few could have foreseen how far he would go. He began swimming at the behest of his father. “My dad got me into the sport,” he said. “ He wanted me to play soccer but swimming was the only sport I could do at the time.” By the age of nine Krayzelburg was practicing nearly five hours a day, improving with the passing time. But when he was 14 his family moved to Los Angeles, California where Krayzelburg came up against some of the same challenges many immigrants face. “The hardest thing for me was adapting to the culture and learning the language,” he said. “The language barrier made it difficult to communicate with my teammates on the swim team.” He began his swimming career in America at the Westside Jewish Center, where he also worked to help his family. But he found the he was not challenged enough. Before long he was ready to quit. But instead he chose to keep swimming. Krayzelburg went on to compete in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic games. He won gold in the 100 and 200 meter backstroke and was part of the medley team that won gold both in Sydney and Athens. Krayzelburg now has opened two swim schools where children may learn not only swimming techniques but also lessons that can be applied outside the pool. “Good work ethic, swimming teaches you that on a daily basis,” he said.“Even if you’re at the highest level or just a beginner you have to be committed to be successful.”
11/05/07Leddy Runs Strong for Swim Strong!!
What a great day for the New York City Marathon…and for Kevin Leddy. Not only did he finish his run…but took over two minutes off his time sailing in under the four hour mark! Kevin said the whole experience was a blast. Running through each of the boroughs with all the cheering people was just fabulous. “Hats off to Brooklyn, for being the most exciting borough to run through”. Between the bands and folks singing and dancing…it was like being at a party the whole time! All that training paid off. He didn’t hit the wall…but certainly had to tough it out getting through mile 23. Kevin gritted his teeth, put his head down and pushed through to a great finish, breaking his own target time by two minutes! What an inspiration for the St. Sebastian swimmers and alumni who will be striving to set new records for themselves for their swim marathon later this month. Last year the swimmers broke 900 miles!!! What will they do this year? Many thanks to all who supported Kevin in his personal challenge and financially supported the Swim Strong Foundation. We are well on our way to our goal of $5,000. Contributions may be made through the website at www.theswimstrongfoundation.org or Checks may be made out to the Swim Strong Foundation and mailed to 30-17 89th Street, East Elmhurst NY 11369.

10/23/07Marathoner Running for Swim Strong Foundation!!
On November 4th Kevin Leddy, native of Co. Cavan Ireland will be running the New York City Marathon (26 miles) on behalf of the Swim Strong Foundation. Hoping to raise $5,000 for the foundation, Mr. Leddy is on a campaign to raise donations of at least one dollar per mile. Kevin sits on the board of the Foundation and is the father of two St. Sebastian's swimming alumni. "Two of my children, Eoghan & Darragh, have swum with St Sebastian's swim team for many years and they have carried over that energy, training and team spirit with them to their high schools where both of them are very active in athletics," Mr. Leddy said. Mr. Leddy has been running for ten years in preparation for this marathon. "Training has been quite difficult. I rise about five, five mornings a week and run between six and ten miles depending on the energy level," he said. Let's get behind Kevin by helping him meet his sponsorship goals for the Foundation and by cheering for him on November 4th!! Tax Deductible Donations can be made here: or by sending a check made out to the Swim Strong Foundation to The Swim Strong Foundation 30-17 89th Street, East Elmhurst, NY 11369.
